Welcome to Relaunch Week!
Gulo Gulo Hockey celebrates its first birthday the only way we know how: with extensive coverage of all things Michigan hockey. Join us!
Hello and welcome to Relaunch Week at Gulo Gulo Hockey!
As you surely know by now, the University of Michigan men’s ice hockey team will open its season on Saturday night with an exhibition game against Windsor. We decided to mark the return of actual hockey games with some pomp and circumstance, so once again, welcome to Relaunch Week.
This will be our second season covering all things Michigan hockey, and we can’t wait to share it with you. This week, we will run three different pieces to usher in a new season. It will all get going at noon today, when part one of our two-part interview with Michigan’s women’s hockey coach Jenna Trubiano drops. Coach Trubiano was kind enough to talk through her program with us from all sorts of angles—recruitment, youth girls hockey in the state of Michigan, frustrations with university administration. If you have any interest in grassroots hockey and program building, we assure you you’ll love it. On Wednesday, part three of our roster preview series will come out, covering goaltending and specialty teams. Lastly, on Friday, our essay on the ascension of six Michigan Wolverines from last year’s men’s team to professional hockey will debut. We are quite excited for you to see it.
Suffice it to say this should be a wonderful week over at gulogulohockey.substack.com, but before we go any further, some introductions might be in order. My name is Sam Stockton, and I will be your comrade in Michigan hockey arms over the coming season. Last year, we kept things anonymous, but we figured we might as well forsake that anonymity in the interest of upholding our lofty journalistic standards.
Our internal analytics department suggests that many of you didn’t join us until after last hockey season concluded, so we thought it might make some sense to review our coverage’s SOP.
Each week, you can be assured of at least two updates from us. One will be the Midweek Roundup, generally published on Wednesday or Thursday. This will be a series of short blurbs on anything we see as worthy of consideration from the week in (Michigan) hockey. It will include a preview of the upcoming weekend, any lingering notes from the previous weekend, and anything else that’s been on our mind.
Then, on Sundays, we will release our game columns, recapping and analyzing the weekend’s action. We like to think of these as “close-readings” of Michigan’s weekend series, picking out defining moments and performances that seek to capture all the nuances of a game as fast-paced and wonderfully chaotic as college hockey.
Those two pieces will be standard, and we will look to add in bonus pieces whenever and wherever possible.
Lastly, another new feature for this season is our Ko-Fi account. We have no intention of putting this site behind a paywall; we’d much rather share it with as many people as we possibly can. However, in the interest of pursuing our primary goal—writing this newsletter until the sun swallows the earth, Ko-Fi will allow us to accept tips or donations (or however else you might wish to conceive of it). We certainly don’t expect everyone to donate, nor will donors receive any special benefits, but if you appreciate the work we do here, perhaps you will consider slipping us a few bucks with this link.
More than anything, we look forward to another delightful season of watching, thinking and writing about, and agonizing over Michigan hockey with you all. Thanks for joining us!
